Weeks of Action

Members of the multi-agency team tasked with cracking down and cleaning up Westfield gathered today to mark the start of the area’s Week Of Action.

Targeted activity to tackle anti-social behaviour and nuisance motorbikes is going hand-in-hand with a drive to clean the streets, remove graffiti, engage with the community, and highlight activities for young people. The aim of the week, which ends on 24 November, is to create a cleaner, safer and greener place to live.

The co-ordinated week of activity involves Sheffield City Council, South Yorkshire Police, Sheffield Homes, South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue, Kier, Sheffield Drug & Alcohol Action Team, Sheffield Futures, DVLA, Travel South Yorkshire and local community groups.

All the activity culminates in a Fun Day on Saturday 24 November at Westfield Sports College. Attractions include a Five-a-Side football tournament, workshops and displays around crime prevention and safety.

Further initiatives include high visibility patrols by police and Community Support Officers, drop in sessions at the mobile police station in Westfield Centre, activities for young people run by Sheffield Futures at the John Barnett Connexions Centre at Carley Drive, and community consultation.

Councillor Mazher Iqbal, Sheffield City Council Cabinet Advisor for Safety said: “We’re listening to people living in the area who have told us that they are concerned about anti-social behaviour, including nuisance motorbikes. These Weeks of Action have been very effective in other areas of the city, and give us an opportunity to improve the environment as well as crack down on the things which affect people’s quality of life.”

Inspector Colin McFarlane, from the Woodhouse & Mosborough Safer Neighbourhood Area said: "The week of Action in Westfield is a combined effort by various partners to make improvements for local residents. We have prepared various operations to tackle both crime and anti social behaviour and will target resources at areas where the public have told us they are suffering due to the behaviour of a small group of individuals. The whole process of the Week of Action is managed through the area’s Neighbourhood Action Group and we hope collectively to make long term quality of life changes for the residents of Westfield."

Two Weeks of Action are happening in Sheffield from 19 to 24 November, at Westfield and Arbourthorne.
