Operation Glean
SHEFFIELD POLICE has embarked on its latest offensive
against drug dealers in the city – Operation
Glean.
Since February 2007, a special intelligence gathering
operation has been conducted in Sheffield.
The aim of Operation Glean is to achieve the following
objectives:
- To reduce the number of drug suppliers within the city
- To identify drug supply networks based in other cities that were making drugs available on our streets
- To reduce the acquisitive crime rate within Sheffield specifically in the areas of burglary, street robbery and vehicle crime
- To work with partners to produce a longer term strategy to get more drug users into drug treatment and provide support to their families
- Address the environmental issues surrounding drug abuse
The operation is specifically targeting people suspected of
dealing in Class A substances – particularly crack cocaine, cocaine and heroin.
As a result of the intelligence and evidence-gathering
exercise a large number of people have been identified as suspected of being
concerned in the supply of Class A controlled drugs.
From Tuesday 25 September 2007, through to Thursday 27
September 2007, police officers will be arresting those people suspected of
committing drugs offences, searching premises and gathering and securing
evidence connected to the misuse and supply of controlled drugs.
On any one day, up to 160 police officers will be
involved in the arrest phase of this operation.
Special courts at Sheffield Magistrates Court will be
sitting to deal promptly with any persons charged with offences.
Operation Glean is the culmination of many months hard
work of many organisations across the city of Sheffield – including Sheffield
Police, Sheffield Crown Prosecution Service, the Drug Action Team, Sheffield
City Council, UK Immigration Service, Sheffield Probation Service, The Prison services, Sheffield Magistrates
Court, Sheffield First Safer Communities Partnership and local health trusts.
During the arrest
phase, immediate support will also be available from police response vans,
drugs dogs, dog handlers, Scenes of Crime officers, a prison bus and the
Sheffield Police Financial Investigation Unit.
